Bei den magischen Praktiken, die S. Iulius Africanus schildert, kann man gut den Bedarf der Kundschaft erkennen, etwa an empfängnisverhütenden wie -steigernden Mitteln.
Auffallend ist noch eine Wahrheitsdroge, anzuwenden bei des Diebstahls Verdächtigen:

He devises a way to expose thefts committed in secret, by cutting out the tongues of tadpoles, pickling them, and then mixing them with meal at the time of their use, and giving the mixture to those under suspicion of stealing the missing item. The one who has purloined the stolen object, he says, plainly and openly gives himself away, behaving as if he fell into a trance. He calls this dish “thief-detector [κλεπτέλεγχον]”.
