Artemon in Book I of On the Dionysiac Guild claims that Timotheus of Miletus is widely believed to have played a magadis [μάγαδις] equipped with an exceptionally large number of strings. This is why, when he was being called to account in Sparta for allegedly corrupting the ancient musical style, and someone was about to cut off his excess strings, he pointed out that they had a small statue of Apollo holding a lyre with the same number of strings as his own was strung with, and was acquitted.

Traditionsstarre in der Musik ... Wäre sie in Europa ähnlich streng gewesen im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert, hätte Bach mit seinem "wohltemperierten Klavier" keine Chance gehabt, es wäre ihm mit der adze (Queraxt, Dechsel) zerschlagen worden ... :-( Ganz zu schweigen vom Saxophon, als es sich ins Orchester drängte!
