Plutarch, Aussprüche von Spartanern (Moralia 221 D):
Themisteas foretold to Leonidas, the king, the coming destruction both of himself and of his fellow-soldiers at Thermopylae, for he was a prophet. He was sent away by Leonidas to Sparta, on the pretext of announcing there what would come to pass, but in reality so that he should not suffer death with the rest. He, however, would not brook this, but said, “I was sent out to fight, not to carry messages. [μαχητὴς ἐπέμφθην οὐκ ἀγγελιαφόρος.]”

Sind bei diesen Geschichten auch vaticinia ex eventu im Spiel, die man für solche Ereignisse erfunden hat wie in der Bibel (z.B.Tempelzerstörung)?

Natürlich konnte man eine Rinderleber zu Rate ziehen, aber um die Niederlage bei den Thermopylen vorauszusehen, brauchte man kein großer Prophet zu sein; hier kommt es auf etwas anderes an: daß die Spartaner dennoch "bei der Fahne blieben", obwohl sie die Möglichkeit gehabt hätten, sich der Katastrophe halbwegs ehrenhaft zu entziehen.
