Plutarch, Die alten Sitten der Spartaner:
1.
To each one of those who comes in to the public meals the eldest man says, as he points to the doors, “Through these no word goes out [διὰ τούτων, φησίν, οὐδεὶς ἐξέρχεται λόγος].”

Vgl. Plutarch, Tischgespräche (Moralia 697 E):
When they [sc. the Lacedaemonians] invite a young man or a foreign visitor to their common meal, they point at the door and say, “No talk goes out that way [ταύτῃ, φασίν, οὐκ ἐξέρχεται λόγος].”

Vgl. Plutarch, Lykurgos 12:
Jedem Eintretenden zeigte der Älteste die Tür und sagte: „Durch diese geht kein Wort hinaus [διὰ τούτων, φησίν, ἔξω λόγος οὐκ ἐκπορεύεται].

They learned to read and write for purely practical reasons; but all other forms of education they banned from the country, books and treatises being included in this quite as much as men. All their education was directed toward prompt obedience to authority, stout endurance of hardship, and victory or death in battle.
