Valerius Maximus, Memorabilia VI 2, 1:
[...] When Privernum (1) was taken and those who had incited that town to rebellion killed, the indignant senate deliberated on what to do with the rest of the inhabitants. So their lives went up and down in the balance, subjected at the same time to the victorious and the angry.

However, although they saw that their only remaining recourse lay in entreaties, they could not forget their freeborn Italian blood. For when their leader was asked in the senate house what punishment they deserved to suffer, he replied: “That which men deserve who think they are worthy of freedom [quam merentur qui se dignos libertate iudicant].”

He had taken up arms with words [verbis arma sumpserat] and inflamed the Conscript Fathers’ exasperated minds. But Consul Plautius, who favoured the cause of the Privernates, offered him a retreat from his bold saying, asking what sort of peace the Romans would have with them if they were granted impunity.

With firm countenance he replied: “If you give us a good one, perpetual; if a bad, not for long [si bonam dederitis, inquit, perpetuam, si malam, non diuturnam].” The result of his words was that the vanquished were not merely given pardon but also the right of our citizenship.
